Purré de pomme de terre

A creamy and comforting French-style mashed potato dish, perfect as a side for meats, vegetables, or holiday meals. This classic purée is buttery, smooth, and rich in flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 kg (2.2 lbs) potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet preferred)

  • 100 g (7 tbsp) unsalted butter

  • 150 ml (2/3 cup) whole milk (warm)

  • Salt to taste

  • White pepper to taste

  • Optional: a pinch of nutmeg or garlic for extra flavor

Instructions

  • Peel and cut the potatoes into even chunks.

  • Place them in a large pot, cover with cold salted water, and bring to a boil.

  • Reduce to a simmer and cook for 15–20 minutes, or until fork-tender.

  • Drain the potatoes well and return them to the pot.

  • Mash using a potato ricer or masher until smooth.

  • Stir in butter until melted and incorporated.

  • Gradually add the warm milk, mixing until the purée is creamy and smooth.

  • Season with salt, white pepper, and optional nutmeg or garlic.

  • Serve warm, garnished with herbs if desired

Notes

  • For ultra-smooth texture, use a potato ricer or food mill.

  • Substitute cream for milk if you prefer a richer purée.

  • Reheats well; just stir in a bit more milk when warming.
